There is a growing trend towards homes that use alternative energy sources such as wind, solar and even geothermal energy and it is one that is going to continue to grow as fossil fuel prices continue to skyrocket over the next decade. As energy consumption continues to grow along with the population of the planet, we are going to have to continue to further utilize alternatives to fossil fuels and being able to tap into these alternative energy sources now is going to save you money in the future. There are a number of ways that can be used so that anyone can utilize alternative energy, help reduce carbon emissions, and save some money in the process.
One of the easiest ways that someone can save money and help reduce their carbon footprint is by purchasing green energy credits from your energy company. Many energy companies offer “green” energy, or energy that is procured from “green energy sources. These “green” energy sources are things such solar, wind, hydroelectric, and even geothermal. The thing that makes all of these energy sources “green” is the fact that they are renewable and they don’t have a negative impact on our environment. Calling up your energy company, there should be a number on your electric bill, and asking them if they have a green energy program you can enroll yourself into and many of them will say yes. If not, there are a whole host of energy companies around the country who are more than willing to sell their extra green energy to environment conscious consumers.
Another, slightly more difficult but much more permanent way is to actually get solar panels installed on your home. There are companies all over the country who sell and install solar panels onto the roofs of homes which are then used to help produce electricity for the household. Now, normally the solar panels would be considered quite expensive but there is one fact that we’re overlooking; they’re subsidized! What this means is that the government, both federal and very often state, are willing to give tax credits and other bonuses to people who get solar panels installed. Between the energy savings that you will get from having and using solar energy produced at your own home in addition to the tax breaks that you get for having a solar panel installed; solar panels will save you a lot of money. They may not be the most beautiful thing sitting on your roof, but when you see all the money that you save, you’ll think of it as the ugly duckling that lays golden eggs.
