New York City may be a sorry scene of anal-retentive perfectionists (anyone see Seinfeld?) but that shouldn’t stop you from loving the food! We all handle this fact in different ways; some lackadaisically work themselves into exhaustion and others order their minions around like a junior Stalin, the fact remains that this city of striving perfect people produces some pretty powerful products. Take, as an example, Say Cheese! A tiny restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen that is part kitsch, part perfection, all cheese. They describe themselves as simply as can be: “Say Cheese! Home of the Grilled Cheese Sandwich” (notice the capitalized sandwich; a proper name in case you were wondering).
In terms of types of cheese typically available at Say Cheese, the list is fairly comprehensive. American, Cheddar, Mozzarella, Provolone, Swiss, Muenster (“Muenster?!?”) Monterey Jack, Jack, or Pepperjack (because there are three different varities) – and this is just what they have regularly available!
And, of course, coming from a city of perfectionists as they do, the folks over at Say Cheese have done a fine job pairing these cheeses with their appropriate sandwich body; if cheese sandwich just isn’t enough for you. At Say Cheese you can get their Tuna Schmuna which includes chunks of white tuna, basil, low fat mayo, and tomatoes and comes on Flatbread with the cheddar. If you’re looking for artichokes and American cheese, you can get their Chokes on Tuna (har-har!).
But the sandwiches at Say Cheese don’t all need to make you laugh. In fact the sandwich selection at Say Cheese is impressive indeed; enough to make anyone open up their chompers and dive right in. their Turkey Flat is the meat, Portobello mushrooms, avocado spread, with Provolone being the cheese of record.
Or you can try Say Cheese’s “Roma,” which is Mozzarella, plum tomatoes, pesto, low fat may spread, on sourdough bread; their “El Cubano,” roasted pork, ham, pickles, wrapped up in a Swiss conundrum with their low fat mayo spread on sourdough; or their exotic looking “Chicken Melt” which comes adorned with the Say Cheese grilled chicken breast, avocado spread, sautéed onions, all coming together around black olive bread on American Cheese.
Cheese is the real winner at Say Cheese in Hell’s Kitchen. They have other things; salads (with soup or grilled cheese sandwich, gyro’s, Philly Cheese Steaks, and more, but the real winner here and the reason for visiting has to be the Cheese!
