Slated to premiere in 2010, this Battlestar Galactica prequel has received the green light to put together 20 episodes including a two-hour pilot. It was announced today by Dave Howe, President, Sci Fi. Caprica will be the prequel to the hit series Battlestar Galactica. According to a SciFi press release, it stars Eric Stoltz (Milk, Chicago Hope), Esai Morales (Jericho, NYPD Blue), Paula Malcomson (Deadwood, ER) and Golden Globe nominee Polly Walker (Cane, Rome).
The prequel is set 50 years before the Battlestar Galactica we’ve come to know and love, following the rivalry between two families – the Graystones and the Adamas. It follows their growth and competition as they live out their lives on the vibrant and thriving worlds of the 12 Colonies.
What made Battlestar Galactica so gripping and mesmerizing is the fact that their society, trials and tribulations so closely mirrored our own. With the exception of genocide of the 12 Colonies in the beginning of the series, the characters played out ordinary lives against the backdrop of extraordinary times. In Caprica, burgeoning technolgy, artificial intelligence and the emergence of robotics take place which will eventually lead to the creation of the Cylons who evolve and come back to kill off their creators. But that is far in the future. In Caprica, we watch the two houses blend action, adventure and romance wth corporate conspiracy and sexual politics.
Caprica has everything to make it an entralling entry into the Battlestar Galactica realm: passion, intrigue and political backbiting that will put our election antics to shame. If we know anything about the creators of Battlestar Galactica, while they mirror our current society, they present it taken to the inth degree, and in this prequel we will watch family conflict in science fiction’s first family saga.
Production is due to being next summer, 2009 in Vancouver with a premiere date in 2010. The pilot is being directed by Jeffrey Reiner who brought us Friday Night Lights.
Dave Howe had this to say about the new series, Caprica: “Caprica will build on Battlestar Galactica’s acclaimed legacy of gripping drama and extraordinary characters. It’s the beginning of a brand new epic saga that will appeal to both new viewers, totally unfamiliar with the Battlestar franchise, as well as existing loyal and passionate Battlestar fans.”
Look for a startling development at the beginning of the series that will set the tone for Caprica. The creation of the first cybernetic lifeform node or “Cylon”. Capricans can combine artificial intelligence and mechanical bodies. Joseph Adama, played by Esai Morales, is a renowned civil liberties lawyer who comes down on the side of the opposition to the experiments which are being pushed by the Graystones. They own a computer company heading the production of living robots, the Cylons.
