Vice President elect Joe Biden from Delaware has been a long time supporter of fire fighters nationwide. Biden holds the distinction of being president emeritus of the Delaware Volunteer Firemen’s Association (DVFA). The DVFA submitted an application to participate in the inaugural parade. DVFA’s application was approved and they were extended an invitation from the Presidential Inaugural Committee to be in the 56th inaugural parade on January 20, 2009 in Washington, D.C.
Seaford, Delaware is proud to hear that Ron Marvel of Seaford will be helping to carry the DVFA’s banner as they participate in this momentous event. Ron has been president of the DVFA and is a member and past chief at the Seaford Volunteer Fire Department. In addition, Ron has also led the Delaware State Fire Chiefs Association, the Sussex County Fire Chiefs Association, and the Sussex County Volunteer Firemen’s Association. Those Delaware fire men and women who will participate in the parade have been practicing; in this photo, Ron Marvel is on the left, holding the banner pole.
Ron Marvel and his brother Rick own a family business, Burton Brothers Hardware, located in downtown Seaford. Their hardware store has been in operation since 1893 and is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Just stepping inside the store, you will feel like you’ve stepped back in time. In the spring, on the floor in front of the wooden counter, you will find wooden bins of vegetable seeds. Buy just a handful if that’s all you want. Check out the wood floors, wringer washer, the tin ceiling, and the old fashioned windows.
Over 400 members of Delaware’s volunteer fire departments will march along with Ron Marvel down Pennsylvania Avenue. Those participating in the parade must pay their own way and if spending the night, must pay for their own accommodations. The morning of the inauguration, firefighters will go to the Pentagon where they will pass through security before making their way by bus and foot to the parade step-off point. The parade will start at 2:30. People can grab the best spot to view the parade after 7:00am.
Delaware looks forward to seeing our firefighters in their dress uniforms, marching in the inaugural parade. We are thankful for what you do for us, running into a burning building while we run out, removing us from tangled car wrecks, and fixing the best fried chicken fund raisers!
