The Huffington Post reports that a Senate committee voted yes to expanding the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) to cover an additional 4 million uninsured children. This legislation passed by a 12-7 vote. Now, an additional $31.5 billion dollars will be allocated for SCHIP to help children.
Kudos to you, Senators, to helping America’s children. This legislation also passed in the House with a vote of 289-139. It is a horrifying statistic that currently 4 million children are without health insurance coverage and need help from the SCHIP program. Every child deserves a fair chance at good health. It is so sad that in America too many children do not have health insurance, adequate nutrition, or a roof over their head.
Our government has made the right decision to help children stay well. The American medical and insurance systems need an overhaul. The government is now making tiny steps to help more children get health insurance coverage. That is a step in the right direction.
Right now I know quite a few women who have their children in the State health insurance plan. Many families are struggling as they lose jobs and thus also lose health insurance coverage. Many single Moms after a divorce are unable to afford private insurance. So the children go on the state insurance and the mother goes without insurance. Most people who lose their job are unable to pay to continue the Cobra health insurance. Even those who pay Cobra for a while find that as their unemployment continues they can no longer afford to continue Cobra coverage.
America is a very dangerous place until our nation offers universal health care coverage.
Over 40 million people do not currently have health insurance. Even people with health insurance who have cancer too often find themselves stuck with catastrophic medical bills for expenses the health insurance did not cover. A cancer diagnosis is not only scary medically but too often also destroys the finances of the patient. In America too many people are trying to get well after cancer surgery and handle the hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of medical bills that were over and above what the insurance covered. This is a tragedy.
America should ensure the safety of all citizens by providing universal health care coverage. It is also wonderful that the government is now providing more insurance for children.
