Learning about your self can be a rewarding journey. We often spend time concentrating on our jobs, our hobbies, our children or our volunteer work, and leave ourselves completely out of the mix. We strive to do our best at work and often find that we come short of our goals, or we do well at work, and suffer at home. Can there be a way to be successful at both? Of course, there is.
The key to doing well in any situation is to be well informed. But, what if some of the important knowledge necessary to communicate well with others could be as simple as learning about your self? Would it be worth a taking a few minutes of your time to study the person you probably have completely neglected during your hectic schedule? I think so.
Learning about your self can be helpful in many ways. Gaining knowledge about how you think can help you become a more effective speaker. It can help you to set goals, and give you the tools you need to reach those goals.
This following exercise is something similar to what we did in my Communications Class. The goal is to learn about your self, in order to become a more effective communicator.
First write the words Self Awareness on a piece of paper. Then list twenty “I AM” statements.
I am a mother.
I am a wife.
I am a lover
I am a friend
I am a helper, etc.
Now, take this list and set it aside. The next thing to do is start another list and list all your strengths.
After writing the list of strengths, you now have to compile a list of weaknesses (on a separate sheet of paper). It is important to be honest with yourself. No one will see your list but you. Being honest will also help as you reach the final step of setting your self-improvement goals.
always right attitude
prideful at times
do not always listen
can be irritable
Now, that you have listed your weaknesses, it is time to reflect on how to change them. Which weaknesses do you see as most problematic, and can be standing in the way of your career or family life. Those may be the ones you wish to change first. Remember that changing things in your life is not always easy, but it can be done. All it takes is a little hard work and small steps.
Once you have decided which weakness to concentrate on it is important to set Self Improvement Goals. On a separate sheet of paper list your improvement goals.
Self Improvement Goals
I want to improve my time management.
I want to improve my health.
I want to improve the way I devote time to studies.
I want to improve my speaking skills with my husband.
I want to improve my Bible study habits.
Now that you have listed your goals it is important to choose one to put into practice. Notice that the goals have been listed in a positive way. Often times having a positive attitude can greatly affect the outcome of your decisions.
If you follow these simple steps, identifying who you are, your strengths, your weaknesses, and your self improvement goals, you can really become a more effective communicator in both your public and private life.
