Lake Charles, Louisiana — The surprise today is that it snowed in South Louisiana. In New Orleans, snow reached one (1) to two (2) inches on the ground. This allowed for children to build small snowmen and enjoy the snow outside.
I do not live in New Orleans, but I do live in Lake Charles. Lake Charles, LA is about 207 miles West of New Orleans, or a 3 ½ hour drive.
I knew that I was sick on Wednesday night and even though the thought of snow was exciting, I was more concerned with sleeping and trying to get better. I had even told my sister not to yell or squeal in the morning because I would need to sleep.
However, that did not happen. Thursday morning came and I awoke to a series of squeals that was obviously coming from my sister. I was not happy, but I soon figured out that there must be snow on the ground.
I came to see the front yard and there was definitely snow on the ground, though there was not much. However, the little clumps that were there were staying and it would be the first time that my dog would see snow.
I asked my mom to bring a leash so my dog, Marbles, could see the snow for the first time. As she was getting the leash, I kept looking outside. She also brought my cell phone. This allowed me to take some pictures of the snow.
I went outside and I would’ve liked to touch the snow, but it was also raining and very cold. This mix did not go well with being sick. However, I let my dog go out and he was quite interested in what was on the ground. This was something new that he had never seen.
I took pictures of the snow on the ground. I also took pictures of the dusting of snow that was on the roof of the house directly across the street since it was very pretty.
I had to go back inside the house because I was very cold and still feeling very sick. I knew that I needed to get warm to even feel a little bit better. My sister let my dog stay outside and sniff some more. He finally did what I figured he would do and ate some of the snow. I was glad that he did this because I expected it and thought he would enjoy eating snow as he loves ice cubes and licking cold things.
The snow did not stay for long. It got a little bit warmer during the day and the snow melted making it look as if it had only been raining.
I would’ve been happier if I wasn’t sick. It is rare for me to actually want warmer weather, but being that I am sick, some sun and warmer weather sounds like a very good thing right now.
The snow really did not change my day much being that I stayed inside all day.
However, it was very neat to see snow as the last time that it truly snowed in Lake Charles, LA was in the winter of 1988-1989. I was only six (6) years of age at that time and had just moved with my family from Midland, MI, so it was not much of a surprise to see snow at that time.
