Snowbird Destinations in Alabama

Snowbirds and native Alabamians alike love the Gulf Coast in winter. It’s not too cold, nor too hot to enjoy the beautiful scenery and play in Alabama’s many fun spots. Here are some great Snowbird destinations in Alabama that you shouldn’t miss! At the end of the article, check for the list of web sites I’ve added that will give you even more great information!

Bird Watching

Visit Alabama’s Coastal Birding Trail including Bon Secour. Bon Secour is French for Safe Harbor and was thus named by the French Colonials who first lived there. Bon Secour is home to more than 370 species of migrating birds. You can see these beautiful birds and photograph them all along the Bird Trail. Also be sure and visit the Bird Sanctuary on Dauphin Island. The Dauphin Island Bird Sanctuary not only is home to migrating birds but also rare butterflies. There is a wonderful pier that is also handicapped accessible that leads out over Lake Gaillard to give you a great view of nesting birds. This spot was voted one of the four most important spring migration locations in the United States by Wild Bird Magazine. Snowbirds love the Bird Watching Trails in Alabama.

Historic Sites

Snowbirds come visit Fort Morgan over Mobile Bay. Built in 1812 the fort has tons of Civil War memorabilia to view. You can also take a tour of the facility. Visit Fort Conde in Mobile. Originally built by the French in 1723, Fort Conde was actively used for over a hundred years. Guided tours are available and also a wonderful gift shop.

Alabama Beaches

There are some lovely beaches along the Alabama Beach Shore Line. Snowbirds, you have to visit Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Dauphin Island. One of them is bound to become your favorite! Orange Beach offers a dinner cruise and shell excursion cruises that are romantic and fun.

Outlet Shopping

Foley has a large shopping mall with over 120 stores. Look for the Tanger Outlet Center in Foley. Snowbirds and natives alike love the great deals you can find at Tanger Outlet Center. Brooks Brothers, Calvin Klein, Coach, Croc and Dickies can all be found there!

Historic Downtown Mobile

Mobile is a city steeped in Southern History that is unique to the area. Visit the Mardi Gras Museum, the Oakleigh Antebellum Mansion and stay at least one night at the Riverview Hotel. Ask for a Snowbird discount.

Restaurants

Mama’s On Dauphin Street located in Downtown Mobile is a must. Home cooking with Alabama style. Mama’s serves fresh home cooked South Alabama food! Also try Wintzell’s Oyster House and the Captain’s Table on the Causeway.
