Looking for a great way to get together and share some laughs and good times with your friends that doesn’t cost a lot? Why not start a knitting group? This is a great way to have frequent get togethers where you can talk, laugh and have fun. The best part is that at the same time you can be making some great gear either for yourselves or for charity. Here are some tips for how to start a knitting group to get you started.
First you need to find some friends to join your knitting group. Ask all your friends if they would be interested. Don’t worry if they don’t know how to knit – they can always learn with your group. This can be a great way to make some new friends, too, so don’t hestitate to ask other people as well. Check with your co-workers or anyone else you know to see if they might want to join. Have your friends do the same. After all, the more the merrier!
Next, decide what you are going to knit. Is everyone going to work on their own projects? Or is everyone going to work on the same project at once. For instance, maybe you could find a sweater pattern that you all like and then everyone knits up a unique version of the same sweater by using different yarns or slightly altering the pattern.
Another great idea is to knit for charity. Contact some of the groups in your area to find out if they need hats, mittens or scarves for families or homeless people during the cooler months. If so, find some great free patterns online and then knit away. You’ll get to have fun with your friends and at the same time you will be doing something good for your community.
For your get togethers, have some snacks and beverages on hand. You can have people bring their own needles or have some on hand for any beginners who may not have needles when they are just getting started. Check out the thrift stores in your area for super cheap needles. Or, your local craft store should have bamboo needles that don’t cost an arm and a leg.
Make sure you have enough seating for everyone to be comfortable while they knit. You should also make sure that everyone can sit where they feel like they are involved in the group. You don’t want someone stuck in a chair in the corner away from everyone else.
Get together with your new knitting group as often as you want and whenever it works for everyone. You can meet at the same location each time, or jump around between everyone’s houses. You can also plan fun activities like yarn swaps or exchanges where you knit something for someone else in the group.
Starting a knitting group is a great way to build your friendships and enjoy a hobby together. You’ll have a lot of fun and you’ll knit some great stuff, too.
