Steve Carell’s recent jump from “Office” manager to General Store proprietor adds just one more quirky quality to this well liked television star. If you have been using your television for the last few years, you already know of the success of one Steve Carell. HIs accomplishments on the weekly sit-com the office are considerable and the show seems to have plenty of staying power to get through some additional seasons. Carell has also put himself out there with a few forays into the movie business with comparatively less success. Still all in all the professional career of Steve Carell seems pretty secure into at least the immediate future. That’s why his most recent venture seemed at least suprising. No Carell hasn’t decided to break away from his success laden base. He’s just branching out.
From here on in you can call Steve Carell a television or movie star or you can call him a small business man or local proprietor. That’s right Carell has parted with some of his quickly earned cash to become the owner of a General Store in Marshfield, MA.
The store like its new owner has a charm all its own. Located in the small Massachusetts South Shore community of Marshfield, the Marshfield HIlls General Store has a rural,l historic New England feeling to it . Built in 1853 the Marshfield HIlls General Store has served the surrounding community in a variety of ways. It is a place where people can go to purchase little things that make life just a bit happier like penny candy, snacks and gifts. You can make some real purchases at the General Store but it is also a spot for folks to congregate, hang out a little, put the brake on their daily rush and just enjoy one another’s company.
What Carell apparently latched onto was the fact that in the right hands the public haven called Marshfield Hills General Store can be protected and maintained as a local landmark and community gathering spot. In the wrong hands, well it could disappear from the landscape altogether. Carell who grew up in the Marshfield area and frequently summers there decided this was an investment that he did not want to let slide by. Here was an opportunity to save a little bit of history for generations of area folks.
Of course Carell has a very busy schedule as a television actor and his interest, though heartfelt, did not really include terminating his relationship with his on screen “Office” for an offscreen General Store. Instead he was fortunate to land the services of his sister in law, one Tish Vivado, a local resident, to take over day to day management of the newly purchased General Store. Making it a total family affair, Carell also is enlisting the help of the Carell Group, a Hopkinton, MA firm to oversee the architectural aspects of any restoration that is undertaken.
For Carell fans in Marshfield, the South Shore, Massachusetts and New England the excitement is building the closer the days move towards summer. Carell has indicated that while pretty much an absentee landlord during filming season, that come summertime one Steve Carell will likely be on location at the Marshfield Hills General Store. As Carell put it : “I will be manning the cash register and stocking the shelves as time permits.” What better draw could a store want than the leader actor of one of the most popular sit-coms on the air.
Steve Carell may be looking forward to his summer days in Marshfield Hills, but only about half as much as his many fans of all ages.
