You know if you live in a heavy snow band area or an area that is going to get a ton of ice storms how important it is to properly store your food. Now one food that you can buy in bulk and would want to store is potatoes. Now I know that if your family is anything like mine you probably go thru potatoes like your using butter, but it is much easier to purchase them when they are on sale and then store them.
Now storing potatoes can be a hard thing to do because if not done properly you will not have them for a long period of time because they will spoil quickly. However, if you do manage to store your potatoes properly then you might need to worry about the cost at the store during winter. I know if your store is anything like mine you can purchase a ten pound bag of potatoes in the summer or early fall for around two dollars, but if you go to purchase the same size bag in the winter time the price is closer to five dollars. That is because of the growing season changes.
The first thing that you will want to do when you are storing potatoes is sort thru them for potatoes that are already starting to sprout, have bad spots, or just do not look good to you. Obviously this could significantly cut down on the amount of potatoes that you will be storing so you might want to check and plan any menus that you have to include potatoes when you are starting your storage process.
The second thing that you will want to do with the potatoes that you decided to store is find a clean storage container. You will want the container to preferably not have had anything in it before. This will help prevent your potatoes from being exposed to any new problems that could cause them to rot faster.
After you have selected your container and decided how many potatoes you want to store you will then want to place your potatoes inside of the container allowing plenty of room for breathing. However, you will also want an absorbent material that will not damage the potatoes. You might want to check with your local grocer to see what they recommend. The absorbent material will help absorb moisture and keep your vegetables fresh. Even though you have that material in the container with the potatoes you will want to check them over periodically throughout the storage frame to make sure they do not go bad and if any are starting to go bad or look bad to you then remove them so you don’t lose your whole storage.
Then you will want to move the container to a cool location and keep pest away from it. Checking periodically on your potatoes in the storage will help prevent you from getting a surprise when you go to check on them after a few months and find the entire storage crop rotten.
Purchasing your potatoes while they are on sale is a great way to save money. Then if you’re able to store them so you do not have to use them right away you will be doing even better. I know that storing potatoes can be fun, but you have to do it properly otherwise you could easily lose your entire storage crop.
