The new year brings a lot of new things… a new calendar, New Year’s Resolutions, and new seasons of our favorite reality shows. This year, a new reality show enters the competition: Superstars of Dance. Superstars of Dance is scheduled to premiere on NBC at 9 PM on Sunday, January 4th (8 PM Central and Mountain).
Superstars of Dance is already packed with reality superstars. Fans of American Idol or So You Think You Can Dance may recognize Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe, who will be the executive producers of this new television program. The show will be hosted by Michael Flatley (star of “Lord of the Dance“) and Susie Castillo (from the “House of Payne“).
Superstars of Dance will spotlight professional dancers from eight different countries, who will perform a dance-off in every episode. They will execute dances from their native countries in every two hour episode. The eight countries represented will be Ireland, the US, China, South Africa, India, Argentina, Australia, and Russia.
In each category (group, duo, and solo), dancers will compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals. There will also be an International Superstars of Dance trophy presented to one country. In an interview with TV Guide, Nigel Lythgoe stated that if Superstars of Dance is successful, he hoped that “whichever country wins will host the next season”.
After its premiere on January 4th, Superstars of Dance will appear in its regular time slot at 8 PM (7 PM Central and Mountain) on NBC. Superstars of Dance will continue throughout the month of January, culminating in its final episode on January 26th.
Nigel Lythgoe, who formerly was the executive producer of American Idol, announced his departure from the series last August. He claimed that he was not passionate about the series any more. American Idol begins on January 13th, but will not be in competition with Superstars of Dance, as Idol’s auditions will not be airing on Mondays.
Other television shows that will join Superstars of Dance in NBC’s lineup include the return of The Biggest Loser: Couples, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Knight Rider, and Friday Night Lights. New television shows to join Superstars of Dance include Howie Do It, starring Howie Mandel, and Momma’s Boys, which will be produced by Ryan Seacrest. Dateline will have an inauguration special on January 20th. Heroes will return to NBC in February, after the Superstars of Dance finale.
