Yes America, it’s true! Tatiana Del Toro was officially given the boot at Wednesday night results show of the American Idol semifinals. After weeks of watching an obnoxious, self-obsessed, over-emotional Tatiana take over our television sets, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Well, for the next couple of weeks that is. There is still a small chance that Tatiana Del Toro could make it into the Top 12 as a wild card pick. But let’s try not to think too much about that possibility.
For the most part, the Wednesday night results show was pretty uneventful. In true American Idol style, Ryan Seacrest did his best to prolong the suffering of those contestants who were going home. Later in the show, Carly Smithson and Michael Johns came out to sing a pretty forgettable duet. It’s still not clear to me why these two are always paired together in performances. While I like Carly and Michael Johns enough, I just don’t think there’s any magic happening when they sing together.
There were no big surprises when it came to announcing the Top 3 for the first group. Alexis Grace was the first to skate through into the Top 12 with Michael Sarver following her shortly after. Michael Sarver certainly wasn’t one of my top picks, but he seems to have a lot of people rooting him on, plus he’s got the “good ol’ hard-working American boy” thing going for him. The last person to make it into the Top 3 was the judge’s favorite, Danny Gokey.
It was a bit upsetting to see Anoop Desai and Ricky Braddy lose their chance at being in the Top 12, especially since they gave such solid performances the night before. I still feel that if American Idol producers would give each AI contestant a fair amount of camera time before the semifinals, it would make a big difference come voting time. For whatever reason, there just wasn’t enough drama surrounding either Anoop or Randy and instead we were made to watch those with the biggest sob stories or the most obnoxious personalities.
Speaking of obnoxious personalities, the producers made sure that Tatiana Del Toro was the last to hear her results in hopes that this would pump up Tatiana’s drama factor. She was pretty calm after hearing the results, choosing to go into a fake cry instead of throwing an all-out tantrum. After receiving a few polite hugs from fellow contestants (has the girl made any friends on the show?), she carefully positioned herself directly behind Danny Gokey where the cameras were able to pick up a few last Tatiana shots.
In her defense, I do think that Tatiana has the vocal chops to be on a competition like American Idol. But her self-obsessed personality killed any chance of her winning over the American Idol voters. Tatiana, thanks for the laughs. It was fun while it lasted, but I really hope we won’t ever have to see you again.
