Too often we get stuck in reading the same genre and same authors over and over again. Sometimes we have a hard time finding something new to read and enjoy, but when we are stuck in our genres that we don’t really know who or what is out there to read. When that happens we rely on the suggestions from friends, family, and possibly people online that we have met or articles we read about certain authors. I have found some of my favorite authors based on suggestions from others and just trial and error. One of my favorite authors Ted Dekker I actually found based on a suggestion from a friend.
Ted Dekker is one of Christian fictions top authors. His writing is different from those you may have read in the past. He is best known for his supernatural thrillers that make his audiences think about what they are reading, and wondering if they just read what they read. He was raised as the son of missionaries and lived among Indonesian headhunters, which helped form his foundation for writing and adds to the unique element that his writing he has. Dekker seems to be able to have an insight to things that no one else seems to have. He had access as a child to different experiences and cultural differences that many of us could only dream of having one day. He views writing as an understanding of life and love and the more you write the clearer your understanding becomes and the better your writing will become.
His descriptions within his books are incredible and makes the reader feel like they are really there. FOr example his novel “House” which was written along with another top Christian author Frank Peretti, discusses a house that seems to be a live, the descriptions he uses makes the reader feel like they are running around the basement, smelling the smells, and seeing the same horrors such as maggot infested food. Dekker’s first published book was Blessed Child which he wrote with Bill Bright. He tried to publish Martyr’s Song before that but it was rejected for being too demonic. And his circle triology: “Black”, “White”, and “Red” were all published in 2004, and follow the inspiration of C.S. Lewis’ writings.
He is known for stories that have unexpected plot twists, unforgettable characters as well as incredible confrontations between good and evil. He seems to be able to melt his writing into the mind of his villians, so the readers get a glimpse into what could seem to be the root of all evil. His books don’t follow one specific genre, but spans many including mystery, horror, fantasy, and even romance. His early work was highly influenced by the unexpected death of his brother and focuses a lot of the sadness and depression that was felt. His more recent works have less blatant Christian content and focuses on the battle between good and evil between oneself as well as with others.
Many of his books include characters that have been mentioned in other books. For example one of the main characters in “House” Barsidious White: was mentioned in his book “Saint.” Doing something like that helps his readers connect with characters in different novels especially when they don’t relate to some of the other ones. As stated House was made into a movie in 2008 and was in selected theaters, another one of his books Thr3e was made into a movie as well in 2007. Thr3e also recieved the 2004 ECPA Christian Book Award for Fiction.
Ted Dekker is one of the best authors in the Christian fiction genre. He doesn’t throw the Christian values in his reader’s faces as some other authors may do. He lets his readers think and ponder what he has written and what it could mean for their lives such as facing your own demons before attempting to move on with life. He is an author that will keep you wanting more and not want to put the book down.
