The heart of a five year old lives on inside the adult bodies of the Texas Sand Fest creative artists. Displays of sculpted sand are not the typical beach art created on a family outing. Immense and intricate multi-dimensional sculptures are the truly works of art.
Master sculptors travel from around the world for the annual Texas Sand Fest. The hugely popular event is held the next to last weekend in April each year in Port Aransas, Texas. The Mustang Island area of Port Aransas, located near Corpus Cristi, offers an amazing backdrop for the Sand Fest.
Over 100,000 spectators tour the exhibit in a state of utter amazement. This three-day event also features many exciting activities for the entire family to enjoy. The Texas Sand Fest boasts a carefree and welcoming vibe. The sand sculpting artists toil away while visitors walk amongst their fragile works of art.
Surprisingly, the Texas Sand Fest is a pet friendly event. While pets must stay on leashes to prevent damage to the sand sculptures, a special “Pet Oasis” is onsite, offering canine luxury. The Texas Sand Fest “Pet Oasis” offers a shady tent with water and treats for the four-legged visitors.
Sandcastles are obviously a typical choice of sculpture format, but most of the master sculptors opt for more unique creative expression. One of the largest displays at a recent contest was a huge rendering of dogs playing poker, complete with detailed, and suite specific playing cards. Dragons, career related sculptures, and of course, sea life depictions are often found at the Texas Sand Fest.
While the sand sculptors are dedicated to their craft, and work tediously on their contest entries, they are definitely a fun loving and entertaining group. The crowd can interact with sculptors throughout the festival, and even vote on their favorite display.
The Texas Sand Fest also offers musical entertainment, and plenty of tasty foods at the many booths located at the exterior of the sand sculpting area. Texas Sand Fest themed souvenirs are also readily available. The Texas Sand Fest is an awesome way to celebrate the end of cooler temperatures, and set the radar for summer fun. Should the weather hampers sand sculptors, they simply pop up a tarp, and go on with their work. The Texas Sand Fest is a safe environment, for people of all age levels and physical abilities. Wheelchair accessibility is not typically a problem for most areas of the festival.
Most festival visitors attend at least the opening and closing days of the event, to enjoy the formation of the most detailed exhibits. The music and overall atmosphere generate nothing but positive attitudes from visitors. The Texas Sand Fest creates repeat business, and growing crowds through the presentation of a wonderfully entertaining and budget friendly event.
Only a nominal registration fee is charged to enter the Texas Sand Fest competition. Artists in both the youth and adult division pay a fee of $5 per individual to enter. Teams of artists, who pay a registration fee of $40 to enter the contest, design much of the sand art.
There is no admission charge for the Texas Sand Fest, but a parking free is required. Typically, the beach parking lot charge is $12 per carload. Many area hotels offer trolley transportation at no charge for Texas Sand Fest visitors. A popular beach restaurant, Sharkey’s also offers a free shuttle to the annual event.
