The “Amazing Race” is probably the largest scale reality show ever to grace global TV. Currently, 13 seasons have been completed and there is an upcoming 14th season set to premier in mid-February. Well, it’s a real race around the world involving challenges that would test the teams’ intelligence, strength, endurance, perseverance, and team work.
Aside from those aspects, the “Amazing Race” involves real drama. The teams have their own relationships from siblings, parent and child, husband and wife, long time friends, life partners, and much more. In short, it also tests their relationships with one another. I haven’t seen all of the 13 seasons of “Amazing Race” (I’ve only seen 7 of them completely) but there is one common denominator among the teams and that is how well they know each other and how they complement each other as they go through the race.
But of course, conflicts happen among the teams or even between the team members themselves. They encounter challenges that could reveal who they really are and make it harder for them to work together. They usually fight when something goes wrong. They argue and disagree in their decisions that actually have a great impact in the game. They make mistakes as well and you see their emotions and how they deal with it and move on. They also try to be as smart as they can and outwit other teams. Some even do stuff that will slow down other teams.
Setting aside those flared up emotions between the teams, there are some who would discover an entire new level in their relationship. They get into the race just like they normally would but as they go along the race, the experience changes them. Their relationship grows stronger and that makes them formidable.
Aside from waiting for them to get to their destinations and completing challenges, we often try to anticipate what decisions and actions are they going to make and how it affects their standing in the game. There are also some teams who were there to just have fun and enjoy the race around the world. Some have strengthened their bond in whatever kind of relationship they are in and to a few of them; it could be worth even more than $1,000,000.
The “Amazing Race” is probably going to continue on to greater heights in later seasons and we’ll see more relationships get shattered or be strengthened. It’s one of the most exciting, emotion-filled, adrenaline pumping reality show. We may not be actual participants of the race itself but for them to share their experience to us is really wonderful. We can learn lessons from them so that we can win in our own race and that is the race of being alive. We face numerous challenges almost everyday. For me, it really doesn’t matter how far we go but what matters most is how we get there and who we shared that race with.
