The 15th Academy Award ceremony began on March 4, 1943 with host Bob Hope. Bob Hope was in need during this moment in post-war history, as was the appreciation of Greer Garson who was a sure win at the Oscars. Greer Garson won for Best Actress when she marked the longest Academy Awards acceptance speech in Academy history. Garson moved over for Bob since Bob kept the laughter rolling with serious moments exchanged.
The height of the night did not go totally to Bob Hope’s funny slapstick antics, it went to “White Christmas” where it received an Academy Award for Best Song. Irving Berlin composed “White Christmas” as he was presenting the Academy Award to the winner of “White Christmas”. Irving couldn’t have been more surprised. Bob noted this to others since Bob Hope knew something about music back then.
Bob Hope had a hard task during the 15th Academy Awards, to keep up spirits from this post-war era. World War II had occured, stripping out the very essence of many lives. From soldiers leaving, to soldiers returning, Bob Hope was the only man fit for this moment in history when it came to the Academy Awards show. Bob had respect for NBC, and NBC couldn’t have chosen a better guy to deliver laughs to the hardships of post-war.
Bob hope had hosted the 12th, 13th, and 15th Academy Awards with the 15th being more serious in surrounding circumstances than ever before, prior to that time. The 17th Academy Awards held on March 15, 1945 Bob Hope co-hosted with John Cromwell. On March 7, 1946 at the 18th Academy Awards Bob co-hosted with the famous and funny James Stewart. During the 25th Academy Awards held on March 19, 1953, Bob co-hosted with Conrad Nagel. March 30, 1955 at the 27th Academy Awards, Bob co-hosted with Thelma Ritter.
However the 26th of March during the year 1958, the co-hosts hit a new level of entertainment with Bob Hope, David Niven, James Stewart, Jack Lemmon, and Roselind Russell. Upon the 30th Academy awards with many hosts, including Bob Hope, Bridge on River Kwai won for Best Picture. The great movies selected, along with the incredible host line-up, marked the best entertainment for the decade of the 1950’s. Bob Hope continued to host another ten times for the Academy Awards ceremonies. Bob Hope is rated the number one host in the history of the Academy Awards. Bob always managed to bring hope and laughter to places in the world which needed some “hope”.
On March 26, 1990 during the 62nd Academy Awards, Billy Crystal hosted for the first time. A beginning that would land him another seven gigs as a host for the Academy Awards. When the 64th Academy Awards unfolded, host Billy Crystal had the unexpected company by Jack Palance who then shared his famous one-handed push ups on stage. Billy, with his comical taste, offered his views on these push ups with following chuckles that only Crystal could deliver.
During the 62nd Academy Awards, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Beauty and the Beast, and Silence of the Lambs won Oscars. Out of the entire Academy Award ceremonies with Billy Crystal as host, the 64th Academy Awards was truly a treat for Billy Crystal fans.
The 79th Academy Awards took things to another level by requesting that Ellen DeGeneres hosts. Held on February 25, 2007, Ellen DeGeneres gave the world her fun-loving side with comical sketches, sayings, and Ellen’s slapstick humor many have come to love. As a female comedian, she managed to work it in avenues that kept many in laughter. Since Ellen, just as Bob Hope and others during wartime moments, had to divert the minds who has said good bye to a loved one on their way to Iraq or other war-torn areas. Ellen did an excellent job at this, for this makes her on the top list of best hosts for the Academy Awards.
In a private poll, the question was asked “who would you chose to host the upcoming Academy Awards?” The results were as such. George Clooney was the number one pick, and second highest pick was Ben Stiller. George does have more experience when it comes to the Academy Awards, however Ben Stiller shows the appeal of great diversion in laughter and humor. Something that is far more needed than subtle chuckles.
