When it comes to advertising your pet sitting business there are several do’s and don’ts that need to be taken into consideration. Making the wrong decision when it comes to advertising your business can end up costing you a lot of money in the long run.
1. First create your pet day care. You can not just say that you will sit with a persons pet in your home. You need to really make your location stand out. Most people don’t feel that they need anyone to sit with their pet during the regular course of the day, unless some type of special services are offered. You will need a large enough space inside of your home and outside of your home. This means space for the dog to walk around and play, a space to leave their food, and water, and plenty of treats. For other types of animals such as cats it is important to have a scratching post or other items to climb on, so that your home is not ruined. You can use a baby play yard gate to separate the rest of the home from the doggy or pet area. Try looking into how a pet area should look. You can get ideas and suggestion from your local vet or local pet day care facility. Take a look at facilities that care for pets overnight and see the type of items they have.
2. Once you have your pet space ready, you can now move on to the next step which is advertising. You will need to make up nice flyers, that show all the special features that your location offers. If possible try to include pictures in your flyers. You can show a happy pet using the space or just the space itself. Leave a business number so that they can reach you and not a recording. Some people are turned off by recordings. It may be worth the few dollars to pay for an answering service for your business. This way there will always be a live person to accept calls, and page you no matter where you are when a message is received.
3. The next tip is to check before you hang or distribute. This means that prior to actually hanging up flyers or putting them in people’s doors, you will need to do some research. There are some areas that do not allow you to just leave flyers on peoples doors. It is also wise to consider whether or not these flyers will annoy people in the area. Your best option is to place them in the mail and have them sent to random addresses. This way they will be delivered by the post office, and will give your business a more professional look. Be sure to ask before posting flyers anywhere. If you hang a flyer without permission it will probably be taken down pretty quickly. Most supermarkets require you to ask permission before hanging your flyers. Your local vet is another good option to choose to leave business cards or flyers. Be sure to keep flyers or business cards on you at all times, you will never know when you pass someone on the street walking their dog.
4. Take a few dog training classes and volunteer at the vets office or ASPCA. Being able to say that you have worked with different breeds, and have learned special techniques to deal with animals is always a huge plus. Remember that pet owners want to know that their pets are in good hands. Since their pet is not yours, it can be difficult to get their animal to listen to you. This is especially true of dogs. Dogs are used to being with their owners and families. A change of environment can be very stressful. Knowing how to deal with an animals stress is key to keeping up your business.
