Piracy has been one of the major issues that plague the different industries. There are a lot of people who probably do not understand yet how it affects business and how it pulls them down like a domino effect. Piracy is very rampant in the Movie Industry (DVD and VCD Movies), Music Industry (Music CDs and Concert Videos), and even the Video Game Industry.
Most probably, the main argument of those who buy pirated stuff is that these are very cheap compared to the original and legit copies. That’s a good point and it’s true. For example, original DVD movies cost around $10 each but pirated DVDs could only cost cents. Same thing for Video Games where it usually costs $20 and pirated ones costs just a fraction of that.
As for those who pirate them, they would say that it would be good business for them because a lot of people would buy from them instead of buying the original from approved outlets.
What most of them do not realize is that the industries they’re pirating from are losing revenue. First thing we need to know is that the production of these media came at a cost. The companies pay directors, producers, artists, the technical staff, for advertising, and more just for their product to be realized and bought by the people.
They get their revenues from the sales of the product which will cover the costs but if the pirates take it, where would they get the salaries for the production staff? Where do they get the money to advertise their products? Where would they get the money to even create the product? With lower revenues, they would resort to different ways in saving money for the company. They probably would cut costs by lowering the quality of their product. They’d get fewer people for production and could lay off regular employees. A lot of people will lose jobs and the worst case scenario is what if they stop making them because they won’t get what they deserve anyway?
See the effect there? Right now, DVDs are much cheaper compared to when it started to boom a few years ago. The price almost dropped 50 percent or more and is now more affordable amidst the current economic situation worldwide. They’re also doing their part, at least, to make it reach the masses.
Based from my understanding, we are allowed to have a copy as long as we have bought the original. But buying pirated stuff over the original product is just plain selfish and there’s very little consideration to how it affects lots of other people. All we need is the sense of responsibility and to be fair to these companies. But of course, we still have, and will always have, the choice on what products we would buy.
