For over a century, the idea of traveling through time has fascinated writers, film makers, and others. Until recently, the notion of being able to send people backwards, and forwards in time; and even just sending information has been science-fiction. Despite much oppostion. This idea is becoming more of a reality. Even now, scientists are making advancements on the first time machine in our history. It is simply true; that, time travel can be possible. however, it may always be impracticle.
It is very simple to travel forward into time. All that one must do is travel extremely fast. Muons are particles that move almost as fast as light. They fall to Earth and have short life spans (Pickover,119). They only exist for about two millionths of a second, but when they are observed traveling nearly the speed of light, they last longer (Gott, 36). One such experement with spead up muons prove that “aging, clocks, and time are effected my motion (Pickover, 120).” To put this into macro terms: one could travel into the future by going “500 light-years away” and ruterning. “Going both ways at 99.995% the speed of light.” This person will only age 10 years during the voyage; however, the Earth will have aged 1,000 years(Gott). This is exactly like the muons. They last much longer than they ever should because they travel at such high speeds.
The previous method only really works in forward time travel. Going back is far more difficult and impraticle. One such way to travel back in time is with a worm hole. A worm hole exists because a dense enought object exists. This worm hole will link two places almost as one (Gott). A physisist named Kip Thorne thinks that one end of a worm hole can be moved at the speed of light, and the other remain stationary. When you enter the moving end, which ages slower, you will come out the other end which is still in the past (Gott). Of course this principle can be used for pastward time travel. Just enter the stationary side. This idea only works as far back as the worm hole has been in existence (Toomey,130).
Time travel is now happening. Right now, light is traveling through time. One such labratory is experimenting with the speed of light. They managed to accelerate light past its natural speed. Passing through fiber obtics, light reachs the end before fully going through the fiber (Light’s…). Even now we have a time traveler. Story Musgrave, an astronaut, has spent 53.4 days in orbit. Because so, he is merely a millisecond younger than he actually is. Soon, we may actually see a real time machine. Ronald Mallett, a leading physicsts, beliefs that space can be twisted with twisting light. He hopes to build a time machine with a series o twisting lasers that twist space. He intends to fire a particle in a “corkscrew” pattern down the laser tube, and send it back in time. This machine, like a worm hole, only allows particles to go back only as far as when it was first turned on (Worlds First…).
So, to all the naysayers who say that time travel is mearly science fiction and does not match up with logic or science, here is concrete proof that not only is time travel possible, but it is going on now. This science will only advance. Of course there are many aspects of time travel that were not adressed; such as paradoxes of effecting the past. These delimas have been thugholy dealt with. Therefore; I conclude, that traveling through time is fully possible. Both Forward and backward time travel is possible through various methods.
