While the American Idol Top 36 were revealed on Wednesday, it leaves a number of questions about he level of talent that this season of the show is presenting its fans. After watching all of the episodes through the auditions and finally Hollywood week, there were a few contestants that stood out, many that didn’t, and still others that never even got some real screen time in which to show off their vocal talents. One thing comes to question right away, and that is whether or not this group of 36 finalists actually has as much talent as past seasons.
There are a few names that are now synonymous with American Idol, and at the top of that list are Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Everyone coming after these two superstars is going to be compared to them, and these are quite big (and talented) shoes to fill. In order to measure up, following seasons need to provide some very talented singers that can have their own chance to make their dreams come true and maybe even win the title of the next American Idol. The question though, is if there is even enough talent in this expanded group of 36 finalists to keep the show interesting for a full season.
One possible explanation for the seeming void of really talented singers could be that the producers of American Idol are really holding back the best singers from getting over-exposure during the early episodes of Season 8. Maybe there are a couple of real gems that haven’t had their moment in the spotlight, and are just being set up to really have a great chance at succeeding later in the show. If that is indeed the way that things are going, it is now a cool way for American Idol to impress its home audience. Some may watch the auditions and Hollywood week to get a few good laughs out of the drama, but some fans want to see some of the talent get the ability to really shine through.
As the live episodes get closer to really happening, it will be interesting to see if American Idol really has the talent to keep their reality competition show relevant in the coming months. There were some good singers that seemed to not make the final cut, and the only real hope that a fan like myself can hope for, is that there are even better singers waiting in the wings, who just haven’t been given the chance yet to spread their wings. Well, here’s to hoping that there are some really great singers just waiting for their moment in the spotlight, and that when it comes to the live shows and America’s vote, that there are some show-stopping performances just waiting to happen.
