For ninth months we wait and we wonder. How will it feel to hold baby for the first time? How will baby look in their crib or ado arable little outfits and sleepers? We daydream of baby blankets and toys. By the time the time comes for baby to be born we can’t wait to take care of the new little bundle of joy.
Once baby comes home things begin to change. New parents realize that those adorable little outfits need to be changed again and again, as do the tiny little diapers. Bottles don’t stay clean long, and feedings are every two hours both day and night. There is so much to taking care of a new baby that it leaves a new parents head spinning.
As parents we want to do everything we possible can to make sure we are taking the best care of our children. One of the very most important things that new parents can do to be the best parents they can be is to take time to take care of themselves too.
When we have total responsibility for taking care of someone other than ourselves we often let ourselves go in order to meet that other persons needs. Parents take care of their kids around the clock and often do not take the time to do anything for themselves. This can only go on for so long. Many new parents burn out before they realize this.
To burn out is to become just simply exhausted and stressed. A bad combination. When a parent burns out they are not able to meet their new baby’s needs as well. Children require your best. You can’t give your child your best when you have become drained. Here’s how to take time for taking care of you so that you can always give your baby your best.
When you have a new baby even doing the simplest of things can be difficult. Sometimes we avoid doing these things because of this. The key to getting these things done is to choose the right time. Getting up is never a problem with a new baby in the house. However, getting a shower and getting dressed seems impossible at times. These simple things when not done can really affect how you feel and function. In the morning before your spouse heads off to work take the time to get your shower and to get dressed.
Taking care of you means meeting your own personal needs. Eating is one of them. The number of meals that new parents miss due to caring for their baby is astonishing. In order to be the best parent that you can be and to avoid burning out you need to keep up on your nutrition. Breast feeding mothers especially need to do this in order to keep up a healthy and adequate milk supply. Parents who are hungry or undernourished cannot be the best parents they can be. As this goes on they will end up ill. Eat as if you are still nourishing the baby within to make sure you have the strength and energy to take care of it now that it’s born.
New parents often become exhausted and burnt out due to lack of sleep. Luckily new babies sleep a lot. Parenting while over tired is hard. Your not able to be the best parent you can be when exhausted and sleep deprived. The way to fix this problem is to nap when baby does. It’s okay to catch a few zzz’s while baby is sleeping. Make sure to be very close to baby, or to use a baby monitor so you will know if baby fusses. Nap away. Get some rest because it’ll likely be a long night.
Relaxing tends to be something that new parents did. They did relax before the baby came. They used to. Bring relaxation back into the present tense! New parents need to take time to relax with each other. Even cuddling on the couch and watching a movie, or sitting on the porch under the stars counts as relaxing. Take some free time to read a good book, or to write in a journal. All of these things can help to not only relax, but also to be you.
When new parents don’t take the time to do these things their parenting skills suffer, as do their children. A burnt out parent cannot take care of a child the way a child needs to be taken care of. Taking time to take care of your self can help you to have more energy and patience. It can help you to be the very best parent you can possibly be for your new baby. Baby deserves your best. Take care of yourself to give your best. Thanks for reading and take care!
