When you first get a new dog it can be a real challenge to get your dog to respond to your commands. The first thing that you will need to realize is that it will take a lot of time and patience in order to train your dog properly. The tips below are good for use with any type of dog breed.
1. The first thing that you will need to do is take your dog for a walk. In order to start your training session you will need to get rid of some of their energy. This is especially important for dogs like labs. Trying to train a dog who has a large amount of energy is really fighting a losing battler. All they will want to do is play and not listen to any command that you are trying to give them. It is also a good idea to feed your dog prior to training. I have found this to be very helpful.
2. Teach your dog to follow your lead. Dogs need to know who to follow and what type of behavior is acceptable in their new environment. Dogs are a lot like kids, if you don’t give them limits they will only end up running the house. Your dog should learn that you are the boss and the one in charge. You do not need to be harsh to your dog in any way, but show authority in all situations especially training.
3. Give lots of rewards and praise. Just like children dogs need to know that they have your approval and that they have done a good job. You should take the time to give your dog plenty of rewarding praise when they have followed one of your commands. Treats during a training session are also a good idea to show your dog that they have done a good job.
4. Give your dog a break. Training sessions should not be too long. A good 30 to 45 minutes is a good amount of time to spend working with your dog each day on training them. Especially when they are a puppy. Remember that your dog needs breaks too. Give them change to relax and play. You can do this by taking them off of the leash in a secure area where they can run around. Take some time to play with them and stop any type of aggressive or destructive behavior immediately.
Remember that teaching a dog to respond to commands is something that anyone can do. You will need to set your self as the leader. Remember with proper training your dog will learn to obey your every command immediately and without hesitation. This is very important for a pet owner to be able to do. If you are still having a hard time trying to train your pet on your own, you can try taking them to a pet training classes where you participate with your dog. Dropping your dog off at a location to be trained by someone else is usually not a good idea. You will need to be the only one training your dog and teach them to obey commands from you. These are just a few suggestions that have proved helpful to others and may prove to be useful to you.
