Tokyo Gore Police (2008) Movie Review

by yup tab

I have to admit something. I have a love for Asian cinema. Love it. Love, love, love. Well I just finished watching Tokyo Gore Police. This movie features an Asian woman slicing and dicing mutant folk called “Engineers”.

But now I will discuss why I liked this very gory and very weird slice of Asian entertainment.

Tokyo Gore Police is gory. Very, very, very gory. It has enough gore to fill 100 slasher flicks. Overexageration? Sure but I don’t care. Tokyo Gore Police splashed around the red stuff like it was nobody’s business! Literally everything single way a person could be cut up or torn apart is shown in this movie in very gory detail. People are shot up with gun fire, sliced in half with swords, dicks are bit off, heads explode etc. It didn’t matter if the level of gore was over the top, they did it anyways and I applaud them for it. Yeah!

And not only is the movie extremely gory but it’s also extremely weird. Sometimes the weird turned me off but most of the time the weird turned me on. Weird comment? Sure but it’s all good when you’re discussing Tokyo Gore Police. Ever see a woman with a dick on her nose or a woman who is half human and half snail? Or a woman with teeth on her breast who also happens to form a giant snapping monster mouth on her waist after being split in two with an Uzi? Have you seen that stuff before!? My guess is no!

To me the cast is just second fiddle to the insane gore sequences and the weirdness. But they still do a fine job with the material. I will speak briefly about Eihi Shiina. She plays the lead ass kicker and did a top notch job at doing it. You go girl!

This was director Yoshihiro Nishimura first time at directing a film but he has been in the field for a few years now doing Special effects. He did the splatter FX for The Machine Girl, a cool film in its own right. I have to give a big thumbs up to him for pulling off a solid job! What could’ve been a lifeless dull film instead was an energetic slice of gory entertainment. This film felt like a personal project for the man with all the weird stuff he loves injected into the film. The action sequences are well shot and come off as very exciting. Look out for the scene with the flying fists. Awesome! Kudos for jumping from Special FX to directing with success! Wait he does have another film under the director credit. Screw it I’m no going to include it. Still props to you Mr. Nishimura for a job well done.

Was there anything I didn’t like? Well of course. It might come off like I think this is the greatest movie ever made but truthfully I didn’t. I did really like it. But I have an issue with the running time. I simply felt the movie was too long and sometimes the pacing suffered because of it. That midsection suffered from it the most and needed more crazy gory action to keep things flowing.

To finally end this Tokyo Gore Police is gory fun. It’s also very weird and full of energy. Pacing issues aside I really liked it and would watch it again in the near future. Future cult classic? For sure. The end promises more gore coming soon so look out for a sequel!

Highly Recommended.
