There were some really great songs that were released during 2008. Although there are some which will soon be forgotten, there are others which will remain in our minds for years to come. Here are what I believe to be the top 10 songs of 2008.
1. Pink – “So What”
The 2008 song “So What” is something different than anything Pink has ever done before – in a good way that is. Although I have always liked Pink since the moment that she made her debut, I really think that this song showcases her true talent. It is definitely, in my opinion, the best song of 2008.
2. Leona Lewis – “Bleeding Love”
“Bleeding Love” was Leona Lewis’s breakthrough song, and it is definitely safe to say that she did more than break through during 2008. The winner of “The X Factor,” she now has a fan base both in the UK and the US. Leona Lewis has been compared to both Mariah Carey and Celine Dionne. Her other hit single from 2008, “Better in Time,” probably deserves to be somewhere on the list of the top 15 songs of 2008.
3. Jesse McCartney – “Leaving”
Jesse McCartney made a strong comeback with his single, “Leaving.” This song truly proved to me that Jesse McCartney is talented. Don’t get me wrong – his previous music wasn’t bad. It’s just that this top song of 2008 is much more mature. The moment that I truly realized it was a great song was when I watched him perform it on Dancing with the Stars. Jesse McCartney’s song is filled with tons of emotion, and talent.
4. Madonna feat. Timbaland and Justin Timberlake – “4 Minutes”
Madonna is Madonna. It’s pretty safe to say that any song she releases will make it to the top song list of the year. In addition, Timbaland and Justin Timberlake are both known to be on top of the lists. In combination with one another, their vocals are strong and “4 Minutes” is a song anyone can dance to – making it a top song of 2008.
5. David Cook – “Time of My Life”
After winning American Idol, David Cook impressed America with his song “Time of My Life.” The song, which proves that Cook is capable of some very strong vocals, is definitely one of the gems of 2008. The only thing that I wonder is whether or not he will be able to turn out other songs that are just as good as “Time of My Life.” In any case, this is a really great song and deserves to be on this list.
6. T.I. featuring Rihanna – “Live Your Life”
Unlike most, I haven’t gotten into T.I. There’s just something about him that I don’t like. I do like Rihanna though, and together, I think that they did a really great job on this song. Like Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, however, anything that Rihanna does seems to be a hit.
7. David Archuleta – “Crush”
American Idol runner up, David Archuleta’s vocals shine in his song “Crush.” His song brings back a little bit of faith for those who used to love boy bands, because it sounds like something that the Backstreet Boys could have easily pulled off. It should be interesting to see if “Crush” will be David Archuleta’s only hit, however, or if he will be able to do more.
8. Rihanna – “Take a Bow”
You had to know that Rihanna was going to make this list of top songs of 2008 on her own. In fact, thinking about it now, there were several great songs by Rihanna this year. “Disturbia,” “Please Don’t Stop the Music,” and the more recent song, “Rehab,” were all great. I thought that “Take a Bow” was the song that sparkled the most this year, but really, you can take your pick of which Rihanna song is the best of 2008.
9. Britney Spears – “Piece of Me”
Although there has been a lot of talk about the song “Circus,” which will soon be released, as Britney’s major comeback song, many of her fans already feel that she made her comeback with “Piece of Me.” The song, which seemed to talk about what she was going through with the media at the time, is a very fun, upbeat song that just about anyone can relate to. Being a fan of Britney Spears to begin with, I just had to include it on my list of top 10 songs of 2008.
10. Katy Perry – “I Kissed a Girl”
Whether you loved it or hated it, you have to admit that Katy Perry, like Leona Lewis, gained a lot of recognition through her own breakthrough performance. “I Kissed a Girl” was danced to and embraced by young girls and women all around the country. Her new single, “Hot and Cold,” is enjoyed by many, but I personally don’t like it enough to include it on any top songs of 2008 list.
So there you have it! My top 10 songs list of 2008.
