My top 5 Golden Globe Award Winners for Best Television Series in Musical or Comedy in television history come from mostly the 1970s and 1980s, when television shows were of higher caliber and quality than the predominantly inferior stuff that passes for tv shows today. My top 5 Golden Globe Award Winners for Best Television Series in Musical or Comedy in television history include shows that had such characters like “Meathead” and “Cosmo”. These top 5 Golden Globe Award Winners for Best Television Series in Musical or Comedy in television history are listed in order of the first wins of this prestigious award by those tv shows. Many think that these honors are just for movies, but achievement in television is also awarded, too. Do you agree with my picks, or do you like the newer programs of today?
Top 5 Golden Globe Award Winners for Best Television Series in Musical or Comedy in Television History Selection Number 1: All in the Family (First win was for 1971).
When All in the Family first appeared on tv screens, it had quite an impact because of the absolutely politically incorrect language and ideas expressed by none other than the bigoted Archie Bunker, though Michael Stivic (“Meathead”), Gloria, and Edith (“Dingbat”) all contributed to quite a family dynamic that dealt with racial and sociological issues on a weekly basis like no other program did. In this ground-breaking first season, one of my favorite episodes was called Judging Books by Covers, where Archie accuses one of Michael’s friends of being gay, yet one of the guys he looks up to at the bar who he thinks is the ultimate macho man is actually the one who is gay!
This show had such sharp edges to it that even though it made me laugh a lot, some of the ways the themes were covered really put the hooks into me. Archie Bunker would be virtually dragged kicking and screaming into being a more tolerant human being as the series progressed because of the all the people he came into contact with. All in the Family deserved to be one of the Golden Globe Award Winners for Best Television Series in Musical or Comedy in television history. It would also win in 1972, 1973, and 1977.
Top 5 Golden Globe Award Winners for Best Television Series in Musical or Comedy in Television History Selection Number 2: Alice (1979).
Alice was one of my must-watch programs as an adolescent and young teenager; and thus, was a part of my television history. I loved the grumpy but good-hearted Mel Sharples and the practical Alice, who was a widow with a son around my age. But who can forget the “dingy chick” Vera Gorman or the famous “Kiss My Grits!” line of Flo? My favorite customer was Henry, who always came in and insulted Mel’s cooking, including one time referring to Mel’s BLT as “Bolonga, lard and tuna.” I’ve never looked at a BLT the same way since that time. One of the funnier episodes in 1979 was called Carrie Shaples Strikes Again as Mel’s pushy mother takes over the cooking duties and pleases the customers more!
Top 5 Golden Globe Award Winners for Best Television Series in Musical or Comedy in Television History Selection Number 3: MASH (1981).
MASH had been on since 1972, and basically every episode was redeeming in one way or another because of it’s off hand and humorously-stabbing look at war, but it wasn’t until their 1981 work that the show finally became one fo the Golden Globe Award Winners for Best Television Series in Musical or Comedy. I just love that episode that appeared in 1981 called “Communication Breakdown”, where Major Winchester reluctantly shares his Boston Globe newspapers with the camp because of a 2nd Class mail stoppage, until he finds one missing and accuses the unit of stealing it, which causes a firestorm against him. I’ve never been in combat, but I must say that MASH gives me the viewer a sense of what it’s like to endure less than ideal conditions. Top 5 Golden Globe Award Winners for Best Television Series in Musical or Comedy in Television History Selection Number 4: The Cosby Show (1984).
When The Cosby Show first came out, I was a senior in high school and recall all the positive buzz surrounding it. Everyone seemed to like it, though I had no interest in watching this show at all! It wouldn’t be until years later that I would come to appreciate most of the episodes from this program that shows Black people as more successful financially, career-wise, and in their personal lives than many programs had aired before. The Huxtables also used more proactive techniques for conflict resolution. These could be the reasons why it was so ground-breaking for the masses and one of the more unique programs in television history. My favorite episode from 1984 is called “How Ugly Is He?“, when Denise brings home her boyfriend who is against conformity so much that he refuses to wear matching socks, then gets on both Cliff and Clair over their respective professions at dinner. It’s not surprising that The Cosby Show is one of the Golden Globe Award Winners for Best Television Series in Musical or Comedy.
Top 5 Golden Globe Award Winners for Best Television Series in Musical or Comedy in Television History Selection Number 5: Seinfeld (1993)
Once again, a very groundbreaking show gets to be one of the Golden Globe Award Winners for Best Television Series and deservedly so! Seinfeld proves that even ordinary experiences are so ripe for humor, and it’s the quintessential show about “nothing”! One of my favorite Seinfeld episodes of all time, if not my all-time favorite, aired in 1993. It was called The Cigar Store Indian. This program really shows how society has taken references to Native Americans and uses them so flippantly in our language. It’s so funny as Jerry tries to keep from using them around his Native American dating interest, substituting rather ineffectively other words. But the secondary story is just as funny as George’s father Frank goes on and on over his missing TV Guide as only Jerry Stiller can play the part!
