Launching late last year, the Xbox Originals line of downloadable games on the Xbox 360 really blossomed in 2008. Some of the best Xbox games of all time were released as downloadable titles on the Xbox 360 during that year-long period. Here are the top five Xbox Originals released in 2008.
5. Metal Arms: Glitch in the System
Publisher: Vivendi Universal, Developer: Swingin’ Ape Studios, Release Date: April 21, ESRB Rating: E
One of the most overlooked games on the Xbox, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System is a high octane third-person shooter staring a charming robot. You get to blast your way through dozens of levels with some creative weapons. If that wasn’t enough, you can blast your friends in four-player multiplayer matches. Thanks to the Xbox Originals service on the Xbox 360, Metal Arms: Glitch in the System gets another chance to entertain gamers in 2008.
4. Jade Empire
Publisher: Bioware, Developer: Microsoft Game Studios, Release Date: July 21, ESRB Rating: M
Jade Empire came before Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and Mass Effect. Thus, you may not have experience this masterpiece made by Bioware. The award-winning gameplay formula is woven into an exciting new setting: Ancient China. The excellent storyline is further enhanced with great martial arts combat system. Jade Empire is about as good as a role-playing game can get.
3. Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory
Publisher: Ubisoft, Developer: Ubisoft, Release Date: April 21, ESRB Rating: M
The third game in the Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell was way ahead of its time graphically. New technologies like rag doll physics and high dynamic range lighting were in Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. In terms of gameplay, this 2008 Xbox Original represents the most refined experience yet in the hardcore stealth series. With the addition of robust multiplayer modes to boot, it is hard not to see why Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is one of the best action games on the Xbox.
2. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Publisher: Rockstar Games, Developer: Rockstar Games, Release Date: October 20, ESRB Rating: M
Although Grand Theft Auto IV was an amazing game, some felt that it didn’t live up to the prequel. This is because it is missing several gameplay elements from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The Xbox Original game is simply monstrous due to its limitless sandbox gameplay and enormous playground. You can pretty much do just about anything you wanted in this masterpiece. Even in 2008, no other game can compare to the scope and ambition of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
1. Ninja Gaiden Black
Publisher: Tecmo, Developer: Team Ninja, Release Date: February 11, ESRB Rating: M
It has been four years since Ninja Gaiden came out on the Xbox and it is still the best 3D action game ever created (even better than the Xbox 360 sequel). Not only is the action slick, it also controls perfectly. So while Ninja Gaiden may be one of the hardest games in recent years, it will keep you coming back for more. Ninja Gaiden Black adds even more content (like extra missions and new enemies) to the original classic. So if you can only buy one Xbox Original in 2008 for the Xbox 360, make it Ninja Gaiden Black.
