Nowadays everyone wants unique, classy and trendy features in their homes without the cost of expensive contractors or hired help. That is why do-it-yourself projects are perfect for creating a great ambiance and atmosphere in your home. You don’t have to pay top dollar to complete these easy and trendy projects but you do have to put in a little elbow grease. The finished product is always so much better, unique to your style and something to be really proud of. Here are some cost efficient and easy DIY projects you can do to add a little something extra into your living space, or do them all for an inexpensive home remodeling guide.
1. General Atmosphere / Living Space / Walls
Change your atmosphere into a simple Zen style.
This is easy and fairly cost efficient if you are looking for a big change and want to minimize the junk in your home. This is very trendy today. Probably the most popular and the look the most people strive to obtain in the home decorating world today.
This is a very easy look to create no matter what your home looks like. We are going to create this look by turning your home back into “a blank canvas”. Go to your local hardware store and buy some white primer paint, white or eggshell white semi-gloss paint. You do not particularly want flat pint as this paint will not protect your wall from getting scuff marks and dirty marks all along the wall. This is especially true if you have pets or rambunctious children! You will also want to pick up a single brush for the corners of the walls, a drop cloth and a roller or two.
Go home, take all the photographs and paintings off the walls and throw down the drop cloth and get to work. Always roll the rollers in one direction to keep the paint looking solid. Do at least one coat of primer and surface paint for each wall. For darker or bright colors use multiple layers of primer until the color is gone and your walls are virtually white. Always wait until the first coat of paint is dry until you apply another one. Paint evenly and have fun!
Afterward the space you have painted will be total Zen. The white walls open up the space giving it a very clean and warm feeling. Add a few of your paintings back up but keep it minimized and grab a few nice house plants to accentuate the warm Zen feeling.
2. Flooring / Living Space
Take out the dirty old carpets and put in some nice new Purgo tiling to create the look of wood floors.
Purgo is a great type of floor tiling that comes in many shade of wood colors. It is easy to install, looks great and is very easy to keep clean afterward. So if you want the look of hardwood floor at a cut of the costs you can purchase Purgo and a foam mat for underneath flooring for a good deal at any hardware store.
To complete this project you will first have to remove any old flooring and get the floor back to a blank unfinished slate so you can properly apply and install your new flooring. This is not as hard as it sounds. It is a real snap with these snap together tiles. You don’t use any nails, hammers or tools. This floor is based on a floating floor building concept. First you lay a sheet of foam core for under flooring down-cut to the size of the room. Then you start at one end and keep laying the tiles down and sliding them together. It is an incredibly easy way to open up your space and give you a very warm earthy feeling that hardwood floors give. You just can’t go wrong with Purgo.
3. Kitchen / Walls / Back Splash Tiles
Is your kitchen always leaving messy counter tops and leaving you feeling out of date and run down? Here is the perfect, easy and inexpensive DIY home improvement project for you. Install beautiful back splash tiling in the space above your kitchen counters and sink.
First measure the space above the kitchen sink and the area you will be applying the back splash tiles to. These are great for keeping your white walls from looking dirty from counter top messes. This will make a real difference in the appearance of your kitchen if you have white or light colored walls and even dark walls. It will create a much easier to clean space getting rid of those dirty pasta stains on the wall above the sink!
Now take your measurements and go to your local hardware store. Pick out back splash tiles that match your home decor and something you enjoy looking at. Because you usually only put back splash tiles in a fairly small space on your wall this is inexpensive, because you do not need to purchase a lot of tiles. Make sure you buy enough tiles for the space needed but not too far over. You can purchase back splash tiles with a sticky back surface so all you have to do is apply in place or you can purchase plain back splash tile and proper ceramic wall glue for this project. If you glue them yourself they will probably last longer but will be a much messier job. I suggest buying a few extra sheets of tiles with glue on them for replacing any tile that may fall out..
4. Living Room / Art / Home Decor
Create wall “boxes” to present items like a framed photo. These are usually made in a trendy row or column of three. You can buy shaped wall boxes at almost all department stores and most hardware stores. Choose from a variety of colors and shapes like brown square frames or back rectangular. The idea of these wall boxes is to place items like flowers or a unique article you may have in your home and wish to display. It is as simple as hanging up a photograph but gives your walls depth and personality. This is great for large open spaces for look and also convenient for space to create more spots for your treasure keepsakes you want to display.
5. Storage / Home Decor / Bedroom or Hallways
You can pick up great trendy storage shelves and bins with a variety of colors and designs. These are very popular right now and look just darling in your home. It is a great way to keep your space clean and organized, especially for people on the go. Pick up a set of styled bins to go on an existing shelf or grab an easy to install shelf fitted for these boxes. You can pick up sets of these at Ikea with the shelving units and all for under $100. This is another great way to modify your home to be more up to date and trendy without all the cost and work. You will love what these storage containers do for your space and how they look!
6. Atmosphere / Room Dividing / Art
Here is one final simple and easy DIY project that is so hot today! I am talking about light weight art designed room dividers. These work as a multi-purpose item in both decorating and dividing your space if you want to cut a room in half. The best part of these is they come on an easy to install sliding rack which means it could be a wall, door or just a hanging curtain. Put multiple ones hanging from the roof and slide them together to make center opening doors. These are an excellent project that come with everything you need except for the ladder and drill for screwing in. You can purchase this exact item at Ikea also for under $40 a wall.
I hope you enjoy my trendy DYI home improvement projects. Remember to do things right the first time instead of cutting corners and having to redo them. These are all easy and manageable projects for anyone with a budget and a few friends can complete easily within a day or two for painting the walls. Enjoy and have fun creating your perfect space do it yourself style!
