My teenage niece has recently gone hog wild over the Twilight series and she told me that it was Twilight that was going to make vampire books famous. This led into a deep conversation over what books preceded those books of Twilight. I certainly fell in love with the book awhile ago.
Personally, I could say that my passion for the taste of vampire books started after watching the movie Dracula and Buffy the Vampire slayer. I watched the movies at my best friend’s house and came home very excited as I had been introduced to a mythical world.
The vampire stories I found were filled with ever lasting love. Since the vampires live eternally it means that when they choose their mate and go to the extremes of converting or changing one to be their mate they are connected forever. It is a woman’s dream to be eternally loved or at least one of our subconscious level hopes. Eternal life allows each other to know that your loved one will not fall to illness unless staked in the heart or going out into the day light to go shopping.
Someone once asked me, as I had my nose stuck into a book by Nancy Gideon, Midnight Kiss, why I thought that vampires were romantic. Truly my boyfriend at the time could not understand what I saw about a man that could hunt other people down like they were a piece of steak.
The truth was that I was well aware of what the vampire could do and the romantic view of the vampire placed me under its spell just as easily as if it were using its eyes to hypnotize me. Another part of the truth is that the vampire male is said and depicted to give their mate quite wonderful pleasure without even touching their mate sexually, it is all on a mental level.
I am a person that is mentally stimulated. To say that knowledge entices me, I guess you could say that I am a nerd, certainly. However, it is also the key issue that these vampires with one stroke of your breast can make one feel as if they had sixteen hours of sex.
The concept of Twilight is Edward’s self control of turning Isabelle into dinner. It is similar to that of a teenage boy having to control themselves as sexual level and respecting their date to remain a virgin. Also, vampires in the romances are depicted far more romantic and gentlemanly that some real life men are in the novels.
Another attracting aspect of the male vampire is that they are the bad boy image. Some girls really crave this feeling of the bad boys and the rush of excitement that it gives them.
Vampires have been in literature for years, and some of those books date back quite sometime far before the 1980’s. Though Twilight may have woken a new era of readers it definitely did not start all of the vampire series to become written.
Some books that I suggest are the difficult to find Nancy Gideon series, if you can find them they are very well worth the read. C.T. Adams and Cathy Clamp who have a few series that also involve werewolves, shape shifters, and then vampires depending on which series you start. There are numerous authors that are starting to come out of the wood work and that have been around for quite some time such as Laurell K. Hamilton. I am excited to say that Laurell K. Hamilton has released the rumor that she is in the workings of starting either a series or a movie. Personally, I could read a vampire series everyday!
Though some think that Twilight may have started the new trend, it may have made society more able to deal with the book that has been sitting on the shelves for a few years. At times we forget to read a book and as I always believe the book is better than the series or the movie. However, I’d be pleased if more of these vampire authors stepped up and created more series and movies. Maybe if we created more books into movies we would install more of a chance to save the reading world.
Yet, then again what we read and what is placed on the shelves as the newest thing could easily change from vampires today to Roller Coaster deaths, reality books, cook books, as it all depends on the publishers and what they are deciding will be, “The Year.” Publishers often try to select what they think what society wants to read and also try to control and maintain the concept of what is to be released. Some may have been refused and placed in the trash can many years ago about the romantic story of a vampire and a girl that meet, but now it would be the best seller.
