The United Nations Human Rights Council has issued a resolution condemning Israel’s war on Gaza, according to Al Jazeera. The resolution proclaims that Israel’s attacks are “a massive violation of human rights of the Palestinian people and systemic destruction of the infrastructure of Gaza.” An international mission will be sent to Gaza by the United Nations to investigate the war. Al Jazeera states that the resolution also calls for “an immediate end to the launching of crude rockets against Israeli civilians” by Hamas.
Thus far, 900 Palestinians have been killed and 4,100 wounded. Over 200 children are among those killed in Palestine. Israel has dropped pamphlets urging residents to flee, but crossing points to other countries remain closed so Gazans cannot flee the chaos and violence.
Former UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali stated that the attacks on Gaza are “a present the Israelis gave to the fundamentalists,” according to Al Jazeera. While many moderates in Israel disapprove of the attacks on Gaza, it does seem, with Israeli elections upcoming, that the Israeli government is using the attacks on Gaza as a show of strength and power.
Israel appears to be flouting the UN request for a ceasefire and they also bombed a UN school in Gaza, killing 40 people.
Peter Splinter, a representative for Amnesty International at the UN meeting in Geneva said “Evidence of war crimes is presenting itself every day” according to Al Jazeera.
I believe the United Nations must take immediate action to stop the bombing of Gaza. Israel does seem to be flouting the mandates of the Geneva Convention. Too many civilians are being murdered; too many children are dying.
The attacks on Gaza began on December 27. It is now January 11th and in all this time some families have not had electricity, water, food, or medical care. Families are in the dark, with windows blown out letting cold night air in, and children are terrified.
Civilians should be moved to safe havens or allowed to flee Gaza. The entire region of Gaza will need treatment for post traumatic stress disorder after living these past weeks in a war zone.
The only solution to the crisis is peace and land restoration for Palestine. Good luck to President Obama as he begins his time as our leader and starts his quest for peace between Israel and Gaza. Peace, salaam, shalom.
