I have a lot of junk. I keep all of my leftover materials from construction jobs that I do, so theirs always stuff to use for my little projects. I had quite a few boxes of leftover tile. Most of the pieces were miss matched or broken. I can never throw anything away, so I decided to use the old broken tile for something. I sat down at my workbench and brainstormed. I took a bunch of the smaller pieces and began to put them together in a pattern. I had my idea now and I began to get to work on my newest project.
I always pick up used things I may never use at yard sales. Last week I bought an old mirror from someone’s old bathroom and took it home. It wasn’t anything special, I was going to use it to break into pieces for another project I had in mind. I decided to use the mirror for my broken tile project. I took a few pieces of old tile I had, mixing colors, thicknesses and designs together. I placed them in an old pillowcase and smashed them into small pieces with a hammer. After I had a lot of smaller tile pieces, I needed to glue them around the edge of the mirror. I used mirror mastic to hold the tile to the mirror. I dabbed a little bit on each piece of tile, careful not to smear any of the mirror mastic all over. I staggered the broken tile around the mirror. Before long, I had an artsy new mirror.
I love old picture frames. Whenever I’m out and about on one of my journeys for materials, I always pick up old picture frames. There so abundant at garage sales and they are so easy to decorate. I decided to use a small picture frame I had lying around the shop. The picture frame is a flat wooden frame, but I guess you could use any size or shape picture frame you want for this project. I used the same color tile for this project. I attached the broken tile pieces together with tile adhesive. I used little dabs of tile adhesive on the back of the tile. Any excess tile adhesive that squeezed out from the tile, I wiped off with a wet sponge.
The best project I did with the broken tile was the side table. I used an old round table I found at the dump! Its top was water damaged and I planned to refinish it at one point. The tile was the perfect cover up for the top of the side table. I used a lot of different tile for the table. I set out the pattern first on my workbench. I made a kind of circular design. Of course, you can use any design you want. I set the tile in place with the tile adhesive and a square-notched trowel. After I let the tile dry overnight, I used a little bit of tile grout to fill in the gaps between the tile. I wiped away the excess grout with a wet sponge.
