Most everyone has been in the position of needing a small gift at the very last minute. If you find yourself in this situation, just head to the nearest Walgreen’s, Dollar Tree or Dollar Store to find everything you will need for this gift idea.
The items you’ll need for this last minute gift include: Christmas coffee mugs (large), red and green tissue paper, box of candy canes, one roll of gold Christmas ribbon, small Christmas bags, small to medium sized red, green or gold baskets, package of stick-on name tags (optional), clear scotch tape and several bags of candy with individually wrapped pieces. Other items can include individual packets of hot chocolate or flavored tea, small bags of gourmet coffee (single serving), wrapped gourmet cookies, cheese, crackers and small bottles of a favorite beverage.
Whether you are using the coffee mug or the basket as the container cut and line the entire perimeter of each one with the tissue paper using both the red and green tissue. Allow the paper to fan out over the top as the paper serves as a barrier to keep items from falling out.
Begin filling the mug or basket with the goodies. The mug can be filled to the top and a little over because the tissue paper lining the perimeter of the rim will hold in the items. Once the mug is filled, pull all of the edges of the tissue paper together forming what looks like a balloon sitting atop the mug and tie the ends with a piece or two of gold ribbon. Take one of the Christmas bags, line it with another piece of tissue paper allowing the edges to stick out over the rim and place the mug inside the bag. Another piece of tissue paper can be crushed and placed around the mug to help hold it in place. Add a nametag to the bag, and you are finished.
Follow the same procedure with the basket by filling it with a variety of items. If using small baskets, follow the same steps of filling the basket to the brim then securing the edges of the tissue paper with gold ribbon and placing in an individual Christmas bag.
For medium sized baskets, fill with as many items as you like but not overflowing. As extra security, a piece of plastic wrap can be place over the top of the goodies with the edges pressed down and around the inside perimeter of the basket to help hold the items inside. Tie several pieces of gold ribbon around the base of the basket for decoration and secure with clear scotch tape, if necessary. Place a nametag on basket and you are finished.
This is a quick and easy gift and one that allows you to be as creative as you like when it comes to the type of items you can choose. Whether you fill the containers with delicious cookies and candy, cocoa and marshmallows, colorful markers and pens, fragrant soaps, bubble bath, Christmas socks, small votive candles or any other small, inexpensive items, the possibilities are endless and the gift you create will be one everyone can enjoy.
