Hydroxyzine is not a new drug, it has been on the market since 1956 (Medicinenet). Hydroxyzine is a drug which is related to a commonly known drug, Zyrtec. When a patient takes hydroxyzine, the drug is inactive until it is ingested. In its active form, it is cetirizine, which is the drug sold under the Zyrtec brand.
Vistaril (hydroxyzine) has a sedative effect, which is why it is also used to treat anxiety. This prescription drug may also cause cotton mouth, or Xerostomia.
Effects of Xerostomia (Dry Mouth)

Easing Xerostomia (Cotton Mouth)
The discomfort caused by the drying agents in the drug can be eased.
Patients taking the drug should avoid caffeinated beverages, which have a diuretic effect and are not hydrating.
Alcoholic beverages should also be avoided when experiencing cotton mouth for the same reason.
Reduce or eliminate intake of sugary drinks including soda and juices. Prolonged Xerostomia (dry mouth) can lead to deteriorated dental health, and adding sugar may only worsen the situation.
Drinking water can help keep the mouth moist, without any negative side effects.
Smokers who take this drug and are experiencing Xerostomia may want to try to cut back on how many cigarettes they smoke each day.
