Watermelon Party Ideas for Outdoor Events

by yup tab

Lots of events take place outdoors, some more fun than others. If you are looking for an outdoor party idea, that’s loaded with fun for kids of all sizes and ages, here is a really fun, but a bit messy, outdoor party idea that centers around a watermelon theme.

You can have loads of fun and laughter at your outdoor watermelon party event, and where there are contests, there are prizes. So the first thing you must settle on is what sort of prizes you will have for your different contests involving watermelon.

The second thing you must consider is space, space enough for spreading out the watermelon activities, space enough for folks to watch, and space enough for washing hands and whatever else might get covered with watermelon juice. You will need an outdoor water access and a large lined garbage can. This might require the space of a large backyard or the city park. Finally, you will need plenty of watermelons. So the best and least expensive time for this outdoor party idea is when watermelons are in season.

Watermelon Rolling Contest

For this game, each contestant will need a baby watermelon. The player can drill holes in the watermelon with a knife for finger holes — like in a bowling ball — or the player can just roll it without holes. To play, players must roll their watermelons toward specific soft objects. Once the object is touched by a watermelon, players can roll watermelons toward the next soft object, until the last goal is reached. First one to the end with a watermelon that still rolls, wins.

The chance of getting clobbered by other watermelons is what makes it fun. Some players would rather take out another player, than hit the soft object next in line. Sometimes it just happens by itself.

Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest

In this contest, you draw your line and give game players their slice of watermelon. They will eat their way to the seeds they spit. Spitting needs to happen over an area where you will be able to see where the seeds fall, like over white butcher paper, a white sheet, or a paved. The player who spits the farthest seed within certain amount of time is the winner.

Watermelon Seed Flinging Contest

A variation of the seed spitting contest is to snap the seeds off the finger, using only one hand. This is done much like you were playing marbles. The nail of the thumb flips the seed off the back of a curled index finger. It’s still a lot of fun, but not quite as messy as seed spitting.

Watermelon Eating Contest

This sounds exactly like what it is. Contestants eat pre-measure amounts of watermelon. The one who eats the most ready-sliced watermelon in a given time limit is the winner.

Watermelon Horseshoes Contest

For this contest you need watermelon rind cut across the width of the watermelon to form rings. These rinds can be made from wounded watermelon, injured in earlier games, or from fresh watermelon used in a tasty watermelon fruit-ball salad served guest at a picnic or outdoor barbecue. All you need are rind rings, not the fruit.

The object of the game is to toss watermelon rind rings onto a stationary post. If you are at a city park, you could use the actual horseshoe pit as the post and score the game as you would score horseshoes.

Watermelon Acrostic Contest

For those less inclined to play with watermelon, you can offer a creative contest for a non-messy activity. For this contest, you will create a watermelon acrostic. Write the word “W A T E R M E L O N” vertically down a page of paper and make copies for guests. Each guest playing, gets a paper and a pencil. The guests fills out the acrostic with a word or a phrase that begins each letter of the watermelon acrostic. Decide on time limits and your judge, and choose the winner based on your guidelines. Guidelines can be most creative, most accurate, most funny, or most rhyming. The choice is up to you.

Watermelon party events are a great deal of fun. You can play watermelon rolling, watermelon horseshoes, you can write a watermelon acrostic, spit or fling watermelon seeds, or you can see who can eat the most watermelon of all your guests. You will have lots to clean up after the watermelon activities, including hands, faces, and the lawn, but the fun you will have will make it all worth it.
