In Japan, “What is your blood type?” is a question asked in job interviews and matchmaking reports the Associated Press. In 2008, four of Japan’s ten top selling books were about the effect of blood type on personality-over five million copies according to Mari Yamaguchi of Associated Press. That is just the tip of the iceberg; children in some kindergartens are divided up by blood type and in Tokyo’s Printemps department store woman can purchase a line of accessories and handbags designed for specific blood types. The Associated Press article goes on to describe the blood type compatibility tests offered by matchmaking agencies.
The interest in blood type in Japan has a long history. Blood type analysis was imported from Nazi Germany during the 1930’s, the militaristic government of Japan to “breed” better soldiers. In the 1970’s, journalist Masahiko Nomi published a series of books based on blood types and called his theory “blood type humanics-a new way of studying the human mind” according to ABC news. Based on Masahiko Nomi’s work, blood type O people tend to seek friend or form groups, have great ambition for prosperity and power and seek leadership roles, reports NBC news. Blood type A people are methodical, organized, responsible and self restrained, they are very sensitive to changes in the environment according to ABC news. Blood type B people tend to seek freedom, value independence and practicality more community and order, reports ABC news. Blood type AB tends to be rational thinkers they also have qualities of A blood type and B blood type and seek balance between the two. Blood type AB can often be called mystical or split personality according to ABC news.
