I remember being around 9 or 10 years old when the original 90210 began airing on my tube. I feel instantly in love with all of the characters. Luke Perry, who played Dylan, in particular won my heart strings, and I remember having an enormous pin of his face on my backpack.
When news that CW would be airing a new 90210, I was at first a little pissed off that they would dare re-name the series 90210. I was not for it, I figured they were not original, and they should have named their show something different, especially seeing that old fans of the original had a very high expectation for this new spin-off. I figured it would be very difficult for them to win the heart strings of new fans, and keep old fans happy.
The new 90210 though pleasantly surprised me. I do though think it could use a lot of tweaking, and the issues that are being played out are also being played out a little too fast.
The show though is decent, and it has even managed to scoop up a few of 90210’s original cast. So far we have seen, Brenda and Kelly. Rumors are also buzzing that Donna may make a come back, as well as Brandon and Dylan. We will have to wait and see though won’t we?
At any rate though, as much as I have grown to enjoying the new spin-off, I sadly already see a trend that may destroy this show before it even has the chance to take off.
What trend is that?
For me, it is the same sad trend that knocked The OC off of the popularity track.
You cannot, and I repeat… cannot begin airing a season and then begin showing repeats after giving viewers just 2 new episodes!
It makes me stop following the show, because I never know when a new episode is being shown, or when a frigging repeat will be aired.
They did this with The OC, and the show flopped. Baffled by why it flopped? I shouldn’t have to spell it out.
If you are not going to air the season with new episodes given weekly, don’t expect people to keep up with new episode dates!
So far the new 90210 has managed to deliver a few excellent episodes, and then they will randomly plop on a repeat the following week, followed by another repeat, another repeat, and then by week 4 a new episode is finally aired! It’s annoying, ridiculous, and not everyone has a TIVO! If you begin airing repeats, one will just assume that there are no new episodes to come the rest of the season!
By the time they realize that new episodes are being aired, they already missed 4 of them, and cannot just jump back into the series. They then become a lost viewer, ratings plummet, and the show is sadly canceled.
I’m really hoping that this is not the fate of the new 90210, because it really is a pretty entertaining drama fueled show. Unfortunately I already see it happening.
