Since the beginning of history mankind has felt the need to explain the existence of the universe. Some ancient
cultures thought a goat God sneezed and created our universe and others envisioned a great battle between the Gods, and still others like the Hindu religion thought the universe rested on the back of a giant turtle. And we all know the classic bible story of how God manifested the universe in only six days.
I predict that centuries from now we will look back on the Big Bang Theory, and consider it just another mythological model of universe, dreamt up and accepted by a very violent culture. We will even consider it a cosmological reflection of a warlike society, that projected its lack of inner peace into a model of the creation of the universe.
Scientifically the big bang theory is based on two observed phenomenas, the Doppler red shift of light and the discovery of background radiation. The Doppler shift was discovered when Edwin Hubble and his colleagues noticed that far away galaxies seem to be moving away from us because their light shifts toward the red part of the spectrum. If galaxies were getting closer, then their light would shift toward blue. Thats the basic idea of the
Doppler effect of light.
After observing large red shifts in the light of the furthest galaxies Hubble concluded that the farthest ones appear to traveling at near the speed of light. The more distant they are the faster they appear to be traveling away from us, thus suggesting that the galaxies were the residue of a great explosion, the big bang.
Well it turns out that galaxies are not hurtling around at near the speed of light. But when light travels such long distances through space, it naturally shifts toward the red part of the spectrum. Thus explaining why the further away a galaxy is the more red shifted its light is. The assumption that in the farthest reaches of space, galaxies travel at near the speed of light is wrong. And it is also wrong to conclude that the universe is expanding as a result of an observed red shift. It is not expanding at all.
The other supporting evidence of the big bang theory is the discovery of the presence of background radiation in the early 1960’s. The theory is that the background radiation is the echoing of the initial big bang explosion. This is easily explained by the curvature of space. Matter distorts space causing it to bend, and radiation curves with it making it appear to originate from all over the universe.
But by far the greatest problem I have with the Big Bang theory, is the fact that no-one seems to be able to satisfactorily answer the question, “well then what would have existed before the big bang to cause this event?” To answer this question most scientists just say ,”nothing existed before the big bang.”
