The Flake Out Festival is one of the largest winter festivals in the Midwest and is the only state sanctioned snow sculpting competition in Wisconsin The winner of the Flake Out snow sculpting competition gets to go on to the U.S. National Snow Sculpting Competition.

The Saint Paul Winter Carnival January 22 – February 1
The Coolest Celebration of Earth is celebrating its 123rd anniversary in 2009. Festivities begin on Thursday night with a Royal Coronation of Boreas Rex LXXIII and Aurora, Queen of the Snows at Saint Paul RiverCentre. ($75 reservations required).
The main attraction of the winter festival is the ice carving competition. Artisans create incredible works of art from blocks of ice.
The Grande Day Parade is January 24 at 2 pm. Torchlight Parade is on January 31 at 6 pm. Events listed on the Winter Carnival website include Fire & Ice PeeWee Hockey Tournament, Snow Sculptures, Securian Frozen 5K and ½ Marathon, Vulcan Coming Out, KARE 11 Get Moving, Past Guard Vulcan Hockey, Family Day,, Overthrow of Boreas, Laser Light Show and Soccer in the Snow.
According to the festival website, about 350,000 attend this Minneapolis area festival.

Lake Geneva Annual Winterfest and National Snow Sculpting Championship February 4-8
The annual festival includes snow sculpting, music, horse drawn carriage rides, children’s activities and helicopter rides.
Winter Carnival at Grand Geneva Resort & Spa February 7
The annual event is at the mountain top of Grand Geneva. The carnival includes ski school, ski patrol demonstrations, ski competitions, snowboarding, children’s games and activities. The carnival ends with a torch light parade and rand Fireworks display.

The final stop of the World Power Sports Association’s World Snowmobile Tour is in Lake Geneva at Grand Geneva Resort. World Professional Snowmobile Association champions will be crowned.
