Alex Rodriguez has come up with a couple of doozy excuses for his steroid use. The primary one used in his news conference two days ago was that his cousin talked him into it. Rodriguez’s constant referral to himself and his cousin as young, stupid and ignorant have hurt his defense more than they helped it. Now that his cousin has been identified as Yuri Sucart, people will want to hear what he has to say on the matter, if anything.
Yuri Sucart, who lives in Miami, was confirmed as Rodriguez’s drug source by his own wife yesterday. Yuri Sucart’s wife Carmen confirmed it to ESPN on Wednesday, after ESPN Deportes tried to contact the Sucart’s home. Carmen Sucart confirmed it to an ESPN Deportes producer, but would not answer any more.
Yuri Sucart’s wife invited ESPN Deportes to talk to his lawyer if they had any more questions, but the lawyer’s name was not given out.
Rodriguez put Yuri Sucart in the line of fire by explaining that his cousin was the one who injected him with the steroid “Boli” The ESPN report says that Sucart has been traveling with Rodriguez for years, most notably in Seattle and Texas.
Sucart reportedly gave Rodriguez injections of “Boli” which is a street name for the banned substance Primobolan. This drug was one of the two Rodriguez tested positive for in the original report by Sports Illustrated. Primobolan was banned by the FDA in 1989, and could have been smuggled in from the Dominican Republic.
Those in the ESPN report doubt that Sucart could have gotten the drug in on his own. One unnamed friend of Rodriguez said that Sucart was a “mule” who did whatever Rodriguez told him.
Now that Yuri Sucart has been named, the race to try and get anything out of him will begin, but it has released in nothing so far. With the Yankees’ spring training under way, Rodriguez and his teammates are still the centerpiece of media attention, at least until there is any comments from Sucart.
If Sucart does talk, one might wonder if he would have the same rambling, easily mocked press conference that Rodriguez did on Tuesday. In the end, his conference only raised new speculation as to how naive Rodriguez really was, how much the Yankees stood by him, and may open a new can of worms with Sucart.
